Cage Nut
Also known as a captive nut or clip nut, is a type of fastener commonly used in the mounting of equipment in square-holed racks, typically in server racks and equipment cabinets.A cage nut consists of a square nut housed in a spring steel cage. The spring steel cage has two flanges that can be compressed to insert the nut into a square hole.
The nut inside the cage is usually square, providing a secure fit and preventing it from rotating within the cage.

Sizes
Common thread sizes include
M5: Typically used in European and Asian rack systems.
M6: The most common size for server racks and cabinets.
10-32: Common in American rack systems, particularly in older equipment.
Cage Dimensions: The cage is designed to fit square holes typically measuring 9.5mm or 10mm on each side. It's important to match the cage nut size to the hole size in the rack rails.

Features
Spring Steel Cage: The cage is made from spring steel, which provides the flexibility needed to compress the flanges during installation and removal. This also ensures a secure fit once the nut is in place.
Square Nut: The nut inside the cage is usually square to prevent it from rotating within the cage, allowing for easy tightening and loosening of screws.

Materials
Zinc-Plated Steel: Offers good corrosion resistance and is suitable for most indoor applications.
Stainless Steel: Ideal for environments exposed to moisture, chemicals, or outdoor conditions due to its superior corrosion resistance.

Applications
Data Centers: Cage nuts are extensively used in data centers to mount servers, patch panels, and other networking equipment in 19-inch racks.
Telecommunications: Used to secure telecom equipment in racks, ensuring stable and reliable connections.
Aerospace and Defense: Employed in specialized equipment racks where secure and stable mounting is critical.
Home Labs: Hobbyists and IT enthusiasts often use cage nuts for personal server racks and custom-built equipment cabinets.
